Peter Laviolette completed his staff Wednesday by adding someone familiar to him and retaining a trio of assistants familiar with Washington’s personnel.

The new Capitals head coach hired longtime lieutenant Kevin McCarthy to handle the defense and also kept around assistants Blaine Forsythe and Scott Arniel as well as goaltending coach Scott Murray, all of whom served under Todd Reirden, who was fired Aug. 23.

McCarthy replaces Reid Cashman, who left the Caps to take the head coaching position at Dartmouth College.

“Kevin has had a tremendous impact on my coaching career, and I’m extremely excited to have him join our coaching staff in Washington,” Laviolette said in a statement. “Kevin is a high character individual who has an incredible amount of NHL experience and works relentlessly to make players better. We feel he will be a great addition to our team.”
