When Dean Evason took over for coach Bruce Boudreau 15 months ago, I’ll be honest, I thought he was just a place holder.

And even when Evason had the interim tag removed last summer by general manager Bill Guerin and his contract was extended basically by a year through the end of 2021-22, even then I thought, “Makes sense. Next season’s going to be a weird, shortened one likely with no — or few — fans, so you’re basically giving Dean a year to prove himself, and if he doesn’t, you go out and get the coach you want in the summer of 2021 or 2022.”

Well, not only won’t that be happening this offseason, Evason almost surely will be a contender for the Jack Adams Award when the league’s broadcasters get their awards ballots beginning Thursday.
