UNIONDALE, N.Y. — As Lightning coach Jon Cooper rode shotgun Friday in a black SUV to his alma mater, Hofstra University, it was like traveling through time.

Cooper, 51, pointed to his old dorm, the towers. He lamented that one of his favorite campus bars, McHebes, had closed down.

As the 12,000-seat James M. Shuart Stadium came into view, Cooper realized how much has changed since he played lacrosse for the Flying Dutchmen 30 years ago. Back then, Cooper was a teenager from Western Canada fighting not just to make his team but to find his way.
