Edmonton Oilers head coach Jay Woodcroft and his coaching staff (Glen Gulutzan, Dave Manson, Mark Stuart, Dustin Schwartz, Jeremy Coupal) have authored several innovations since arriving in the NHL in February 2022.

There are obvious examples, like running a 7D-11F roster regularly (instead of the traditional 6-12), and uncovering ways for Connor McDavid to find clean air at five-on-five.

In both of his NHL seasons, Woodcroft found a way to address roster needs with in-house solutions. It may be his biggest innovation, and gives the Oilers a pool of talent no one could have anticipated before his arrival in Edmonton.

Added to several astute signings and two strong deadline trades by general manager Ken Holland, the current roster has the look of a true Stanley Cup contender.
