The expression on Dave Tippett’s face seldom differs whether his team leads or trails by five goals.

His deadpan look is so tried and true that his three-year-old granddaughter, Rylan, can spot it without fail.

“She watches on TV and says, ‘Papa Hockey not happy,’” Tippett said. “My daughter’s gotta tell her, ‘He’s just working.’ That’s what it is. I’m not caught up in the emotion of the game. I’m trying to think how to win the game.”

That expression – or lack thereof – was passed down from Terry Simpson, one of Tippett’s coaching mentors.
