The Toronto Maple Leafs hired Manny Malhotra as an assistant coach on Tuesday, filling the vacancy left by Paul McFarland (who took a head coaching job with the Ontario Hockey League’s Kingston Frontenacs).
Less than 24 hours after the Columbus Blue Jackets eliminated the Toronto Maple Leafs from playoff contention in their qualifier series, Jackets head coach John Tortorella showed his support for Maple Leafs’ rookie bench boss Sheldon Keefe.
On Friday’s edition of In Conversation, Ron MacLean was joined by Toronto Raptors head coach Nick Nurse and Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have won 11 of their 15 games under Sheldon Keefe since the 39-year-old coach took over for Mike Babcock last month. And they are doing so in a rather entertaining fashion, with the team’s offensive machine humming along at a high enough pace to cover up for some defensive issues that still need fixing.
By now, if you follow the NHL, you know Sheldon Keefe was recently named the 31st head coach in Toronto Maple Leafs franchise history. There’s also a good chance you know he led the Maple Leafs to regulation wins in his first two games, snapping Toronto’s six-game losing streak and giving the team its first back-to-back regulation wins in almost a month and a half.
Mike Babcock’s office is just as you’d imagine it. It’s organized. There doesn’t appear to be a single item out of place. His desk at the team’s practice facility in Toronto’s west end is dotted with notebooks, loose sheets of paper covered in plastic, a book, and pictures of his family. It’s what you’d expect for the uber-prepared, hard-charging head coach of the Maple Leafs.
His high school buddies used to call him “Hockey Paul.”
Years later, as Paul McFarland was speeding his way up the rungs of the hockey world those same buddies would feverishly text one another after each development: “Hey, did you hear about ‘Hockey Paul’?”
